Job Description

This Software Engineer, operating in the Agile Product Owner role on an Agile Software team, will support the full development cycle of software that runs a servomotor drive.  The drive software is written in C++ on an embedded platform to perform motion control, read data from a variety of sensors, and communicate on high-speed networks. Kollmorgen servomotor drives are used for high performance motion control in factory automation, medical applications, and robotics.

As the team Product Owner, you will work as a valued member of a collaborative international team of engineers who use Agile Software techniques to make great products together. The Product Owner (PO) is responsible to identify the most valuable work the team can perform and to clearly define the requirements for each work item. They will work closely with customers, Kollmorgen customer support, marketing & field sales engineers, to coordinate solutions for customers and market needs. This is a leadership position within the team, with some development responsibilities alongside the PO role.

In this position, you collaborate closely and are open-minded to reach the best solution for the team. You are ready to go deep in details when needed to help others solving their issues. You are able to switch easily between different development tasks and contexts.  You take ownership of different tasks and complete them autonomously. You are proactive and collaborate actively with other team members learning how to reach the best output. You are dedicated to continuous improvement and innovation on top of your daily work.

Kollmorgen has several agile software teams based in the USA and Europe. You will interact closely with other teams (FPGA and hardware) located in other locations. Occasional onsite visits will occur 1-2 times per year.

A qualified candidate should have software experience and very strong organizational ability. Interest and willingness to work and contribute within a collaborative team is a must. A great Product Owner will be deeply interested in how Kollmorgen products are used by our customers in their own machine designs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Primary responsibilities:

  • Gather input from all stakeholders (customers, marketing, customer support) to prioritize the work backlog
  • Ensure all work items are well-defined before the start of each sprint planning session
  • Create quarterly release plans which deliver significant value
  • Collaborate regularly with technical leaders in various areas
  • Drive for the best-possible output from the team

Additional responsibilities:

  • Participate in code development as time allows
  • Support investigations into customer problems
  • Participate in code design reviews and inspections
  • Participate in debugging and defect resolution

Responsibilities will be commensurate with work experience.

  • Occasional travel (both domestic & international) may be necessary (<5%)
  • Must be willing and able to travel by all forms of transportation.


  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, and technical procedures.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, etc.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from; inspectors, managers, suppliers, and groups of engineers.
  • Ability to read and understand technical documents such as component datasheets, schematics, and product specifications


Candidate must have the ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • B.S. in software engineering or equivalent degree (CpE, CS, IT, EE)
  • 8+ years software development industry experience
