Job Description

The Altra Business System Leader, our Continuous Improvement Leader, is primarily responsible for the rigorous application of the Altra Business System tools across the Kollmorgen business to drive sustainable process improvements. The ABS Leader will be joining the Kollmorgen team in Radford, VA. Kollmorgen is part of Altra (AIMC).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Along with those identified below, other duties may be assigned. 

  • Drive ever-improving results by leveraging ABS tools, consulting skills, and change management process.
  • Assist site/company leadership in the development of a ABS roadmap.
  • Lead site Key Performance Indicator (KPI) monthly meeting, and ensure a Problem-Solving Plan (PSP) is used to address KPI’s that missed the monthly target
  • Organize and facilitate workshops and Kaizen events
  • Ensure sustainment for all Kaizens & Workshops
  • Directly provide formal and informal ABS training and coaching
  • Facilitate other ABS training sessions when appropriate (other trainers and consultants from Altra, Shingijutsu, and others).
  • Assist in achieving business unit Policy Deployment (PD) and Strategic Plan objectives
  • Regularly participate in PD reviews
  • Continue to evolve ABS tools
  • Promote and facilitate diagnosis of workflow impediments and other wastes throughout the business.  Provide expert counsel on appropriate tools to eliminate them.
  • Improve ABS training and facilitation skills by pursuing certification in ABS tools.
  • Promote and facilitate associate development in various ABS tools, lean production, and Kaizen leadership.
  • Evaluate and approve candidates for the ABS Champion Certification.
  • Benchmark and incorporate best practices.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or related technical experience
  • 5+ years of experience in Engineering or Operations
  • Technical knowledge of Product and Manufacturing processes
  • Prior operations daily management, process development experience in a Lean/Pull operations environment required
  • Strong written, verbal and computer skills
  • Excellent communications and instruction skills
  • Demonstrated proficiency in time and project management
  • Success in managing through influence, persuasion, coaching and counseling
  • Ability to accurately assess key business metrics and situations from a Leadership perspective
  • Ability to design, develop, and implement an ABS roadmap for an operating business
  • Mastery of a variety of process improvement tools like 5S, VSM, PSP, etc.
  • Hands-on experience implementing Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma concepts or equivalent in a line management role
  • Minimal Travel Required (<10%)
