Job Description


The Automation Engineer will be responsible for driving productivity and quality improvements by implementing automated equipment. This position will also serve as a technology leader bringing the latest innovative and cutting-edge manufacturing technologies to production areas across Kollmorgen.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Along with those identified below, other duties may be assigned.

  • Develop machine concepts, design, build, integrate and validate automated process equipment using PLCs and microcontrollers.
  • Design, develop and validate mechanical tooling to support machine builds.
  • Create detailed equipment specifications based on project needs, identify and work with external equipment suppliers to design, build, install, and commission equipment solutions.
  • Build automation funnel and lead event-based funnel build activities. Identify opportunities where automated process equipment can drive improvement in Productivity and Quality. Write proposals and justifications for equipment purchases and builds.
  • Conduct manufacturing assessments in existing lines to identify areas of general improvement and automation opportunity.
  • Track performance of implemented solutions, including efficiency improvement, Quality improvement, cost reduction, and cycle time reduction.
  • Advise Product Engineering on design for manufacturability and variation reduction to support implementation of automated equipment.



Job Requirements

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelors’ in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or, equivalent field of study (such as, General Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering) is required; Masters’ in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering is preferred
  • A minimum of three (3) years’ of work experience in a manufacturing or automation environment is required; experience working with cobots in machine tending or similar applications is preferred
  • Proficient in one or more CAD packages (ex: Creo, Solidworks, Inventor, AutoCAD) is required
  • Proficient in one or more Schematic packages (ex: PADs, Altium) is required
  • Minimum 2 years electro-mechanical machine design experience & mechanical design experience, or equivalent, is required
  • Demonstrated experience in control system development (PLC/Ladder, microcontroller, LabView, C++, VB) is required
  • Demonstrated experience with pneumatic, hydraulic, servo or stepper motion control systems is required
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing concepts including Standard work, Variation Reduction/Six-Sigma, Value Stream Mapping, IPO and Process Flow Diagrams is required
  • Event-based leadership experience using lean tools: Standard Work, Variation Reduction/Six-Sigma, Value Stream Mapping, IPO and Process Flow Diagrams is preferred
  • Manufacturing Engineering experience in direct product line support is preferred
  • Experience with domestic or international site transitions of manufacturing lines is preferred
  • Experience creating capital equipment proposals and justifications including ROI calculations is preferred
  • Familiarity with global machine design standards (CE, UL, IEC) is preferred
