Job Description

The Automation Technician 2nd Shift is responsible for supporting automated equipment and training operations team members.   This Automation Technician maintains, repairs and provides support of equipment.  This position may also require understanding mechanical and electrical aspects of machine equipment; technical liaison between Supervisor, Maintenance, Operations Value Stream Teams and Advanced Manufacturing.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support automated equipment in our manufacturing plant and ensure machine uptime.
  • Troubleshoots issues relative to the automation and equipment, resolves issues and coordinates repair with maintenance when necessary.
  • Participates and solves problems within daily management context structure.
  • Provides advice, support or training to other Technicians. This also includes being a Trainer for  hourly new hire training class and helping with on the job training for the hourly team.
  • Assists Manufacturing Engineer, Operations Manager, Tool Design & Production Supervisor in developing, building or testing prototypes and new products, processes or procedures.
  • Inspects finished products for quality and adherence to customer specifications.
  • Sets up and operates production equipment in accordance with current manufacturing practices and standard operating procedures
  • Sets up and verifies the functionality of safety equipment
  • Provides production, progress or changeover reports to shift Supervisors.
  • Prepares production documents such as standard operating procedures, tool lists, tool inventory reports and productivity reports
  • Shifts labor when necessary due to down equipment or call outs
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

Critical Competencies

  • Basic understanding of automation techniques and processes.
  • Basic knowledge of PLC’s. Knowledge of Automation Direct, Allen Bradley & Siemens PLC’s.
  • Basic understanding of variable frequency drives, servo drives and HMIs.
  • Able to use robot teach pendants to move and manipulate robots.
  • Able to access and troubleshoot equipment using programming software.
  • Able to comprehend hydraulic schematics, pneumatics schematics, electrical schematics, operator manuals, maintenance manuals, troubleshooting procedures and TPM charts.
  • Good communication skills and ability to train employees.
  • Hands on type individual that can work with minimal supervision.
  • Able to perform routine maintenance on equipment.
  • Able to comprehend engineering prints and drawings.
  • Knowledge of CNC machine operation & tools.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • High School degree with Technical or college credits in automation, PLC programming and/or computer programming.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in similar position.
  • Experience with high volume, fully or semi-automated production equipment.
  • Understanding and experience with  “Just in Time” manufacturing.

Physical Demand and Work Environment:          

Jacobs Vehicle Systems (JVS) is a heavy-duty manufacturing facility.  As such, all employees are required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in designated areas within the facility.

Given the scope of responsibility and assignment, employees may be exposed to any of the following conditions:

Extensive sitting or standing; climbing, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping and other substantial movements for up to 8 hours per day, not including potential voluntarily overtime; loud noises; exposure to oils, coolants, fumes, odors and other potential hazardous chemicals and materials. Employees are required to have visual acuity to support the basic functions of the role as defined above.
