Job Description

SUMMARY

The Buyer is responsible for executing tactical purchasing and/or planning activities for designated business unit(s). The position is also responsible for maintaining effective relationships with business unit leaders, Strategic Buyers, Strategic Sourcing Managers and  Supply Chain Managers to ensure all tactical sourcing activities support the organization’s business needs, strategic goals and financial plan.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Execute buys and develop plans based on tactical parameters.
  • Execute and maintain sourcing agreements.
  • Manage purchase order life cycle (creation, maintenance, follow through) to vendors.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date forecasts/reorder points for component and finished goods requirements utilizing ERP/Best Practices.
  • Production control and support functions where required.
  • Accurate and timely reporting.
  • Negotiate and execute supplier purchase orders and agreements to support business objectives.
  • Place orders from approved suppliers, verifying pricing, quantities needed, product availability, required delivery dates and best shipment methods.
  • Manage established supplier / product strategies to identify supplier opportunities and challenges and follow through to ensure appropriate resolution.
  • Follow strategic sourcing strategies and supplier selections. Alert Strategic Sourcing if suppliers do not respect commitments and risk delaying the production schedule after having investigated all potential solutions with the Value Stream Manger.
  • Manage incoming material flow to ensure inventory is maintained to the optimum level per established parameters.
  • Understand and evaluate supplier processes, capacities and overall business capabilities to identify and implement areas for improvement in cost, quantity, delivery and quality.
  • Monitor order status in relation to production needs to verify materials are received on time
  • Expedite PO’s when required and follow up as needed.
  • Utilize warehouse and inventory control policies and procedures to assure proper inventory levels
  • Compile data and track supplier performance related to measures set out during strategic development.
  • Perform cost analysis as needed.
  • Support the purchasing and materials functions for designated business unit(s)
  • Responsible for sourcing indirect materials as required.
  • Utilize Altra Business System (ABS) tools to streamline processes.
  • Support the implementation of standard processes for the vendor selection, material flow, and inventory management.
  • Promote continuous improvement efforts for designated business unit(s) for the materials function.
  • Support methods, procedures and schedules to conduct a continuously improving materials process.

Job Requirements

Critical Competencies

US Citizen, Permanent Resident or Green Card holder is required for ITAR compliance

  • Basic understanding of sourcing principles such as securing long-term total quality, cost efficiency, and sustainability of material supplies throughout the lifecycle of commodities.
  • Basic understanding cost breakdowns of suppliers, PPV and OMV metrics, benefits of payment terms, and drivers of total landed cost of goods and materials.
  • General understanding of legal terms and conditions, including commercial, regulatory, and intellectual property elements of a contract.
  • Good problem-solving, critical thinking, and analytical skills, including the ability to gather and organize relevant information, and identify underlying issues or problems, trends, and cause-effect relationships.
  • Strong interpersonal skills which fosters teamwork and collaboration and develops high quality working relationships in order to influence, gain support, and achieve results.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to effectively develop and write routine reports, process instructions and business correspondences. Able to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of employees and managers, customers, and suppliers.
  • Highly productive with a strong sense of urgency and orientation to details, accuracy, and excellent outcomes. Results-oriented with a demonstrated ability to effectively manage time and multiple priorities.
  • Demonstrated continuous improvement mindset and an advocate for change. Exposure to lean manufacturing principles is a plus.
  • Demonstrated flexibility and willingness to adapt to internal processes and change, delays or unexpected events. Ability to respond to adversity or restrictions of the organization with resilience and tenacity.
  • Strong work ethic, including the ability to be self-directed and self-motivated. Demonstrated professionalism, passion, and initiative with projects and tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and handle proprietary and sensitive information with integrity.
  • Intermediate to advanced level proficiency MS Office software applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Willing and able to occasionally travel domestically and internationally up to 25% to customer, supplier, and/or other Altra sites, including attendance at off-site meetings, events and professional development conferences or seminars.

 

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Business, Finance, Engineering or related field.
  • Recognized certification in Purchasing is preferred.
  • Previous experience in durable goods manufacturing environment is preferred.
  • 2+ years of relevant planning and/or purchasing experience, preferably in a manufacturing environment preferred.

 

Physical Demand and Work Environment:          

Potential physical demands include but are not limited to:  frequent sitting and occasional bending and stooping. Potential sensory demands include but are not limited to:  hearing and seeing. Lifting and/or maneuvering of up to 30 pounds without assistance, or heavier loads with the assistance of a lifting device in order to set up test equipment. Must be able to work in a typical manufacturing facility and travel domestically outside facilities which could entail walking, climbing and moving around working equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Majority of time is spent in a general office environment, but regular time will also be spent in a manufacturing production environment where personal protective safety equipment must be worn, and proper safety precautions must be observed.
