Job Description

The Design Engineer serves as technical lead for commercially released motor products.  They are responsible for driving sound technical decisions aligned with Kollmorgen quality, sales, service and production goals.  The responsibilities include designing to customer requirements, product quality, manufacturability and value engineering.  A successful design engineer will develop the basic motor design skills necessary to drive product and cost improvements and will be integral in securing present and future business by consistently meeting customer expectations.

 

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Along with those identified below, other duties may be assigned. 

  • The design engineer is responsible for the mechanical design of electric motors and/or actuators. This may include fixtures, test equipment and hardware related to production. Activities include electromagnetic modifications and application of components such as connectors, seals, gears, brakes, belts, lead screws, etc.
  • Ownership and Technical Leader role for one or more motor product lines
  • Work with sales engineers and customers to ensure designs meet customer expectations for performance and cost
  • Timely preparation of product cost, non-recurring engineering costs, proposals and documentation for new jobs
  • CAD based modeling and drafting
  • Must be capable of translating incomplete customer requirements into useful technical specifications
  • Ownership of design and documentation accuracy
  • Manage Engineering Change Order (ECO) processes
  • Apply rules of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Engineering analysis to support product design and custom proposals
  • Design engineering support for manufacturing site production – local and offsite
  • Assist in leading Quality and Design for Manufacturability improvements
  • Execution and support of Value Analysis Value Engineering (VAVE) projects
  • Hands-on lab and prototype work
  • Must have strong written and oral communication skills for communication with internal and external customers.
  • Must have good interpersonal skills for our multi-functional design team environment

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering
    • Mechanical Engineering degree preferred
  • US Citizenship or Permanent Residency is required
  • 2+ Years work experience with electric motors and/or high speed rotating machinery such as generators, alternators, or turbomachinery is required
  • Strong mechanical and analytical skills
  • Knowledge of basic electrical and magnetic principles associated with electric motors.
  • Experience with multiple engineering drafting tools preferred
  • 2D and 3D CAD drafting and modeling experience preferred
  • Self-motivated & able to work in a professional environment with limited direct supervision
  • Ability and willingness to work directly with customers on resolution of complex technical issues 
  • Have an analytical mind which can apply trouble shooting skills systemically and methodically to identify root cause and resolve problems
  • Ability to travel nationally and/or internationally on an occasional basis
  • Ability and desire to perform “Hands-on” lab work
  • Proactive by nature with a positive attitude and ability to work well in a team setting
  • Ability to develop strong professional relationships both internally and externally to facilitate good communication
