Job Description


The New Automation Build Team Lead is a key member of the Radford Test and Automation Engineering Team and has the responsibility of leading the members of the team whose main responsibilities are to contribute to the design, build, verification, documentation, and testing of new automated equipment. Currently, the team size is around 4 and consists of CAD, schematic design, PLC logic, software, hydraulics, pneumatics, and controls. This team will constitute the New Automation Build Team which will now be referred to as “Build Team.” This position reports to the North American Manager of Test and Automation Engineering.

This person is responsible for ensuring the prioritization of all new automation with the buy-in and agreement of all cross-functional stakeholders. They will work with both R&D and operations to support New Product Introduction as well as improve operational efficiency and quality. They are also in charge of the scheduling of all CAD design and builds that go through the electronics lab to ensure timely delivery to meet the needs of internal and external Customers. In addition, they are responsible for ensuring that the equipment has had all appropriate safety and agency checks with appropriate corresponding documentation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Makes resourcing decisions/assignments of the Build Team to support the needs of internal and external Customers
  • Develop the Build Team through quality development plans to develop team in both technical skills as well as Guiding Principles
  • Maintain and manage KPI (Key Performance Indicators) metrics for the group such as On-Time Delivery, Reduction in Failures of New Equipment, Percentage of Initial Safety Audits Passed, and other metrics depending on business needs.
  • May provide expert consultation in one or more areas for the design, development, and implementation of technical products and systems. 
  • Relies on the extensive experience and judgement of team and self to plan and accomplish goals.
  • Supports Continuous Improvement activity individually and with Engineering resources as appropriate.
  • Responsible for compliance to various agency needs such as UL, CE, CSA, etc. when necessary
  • Design and a wide array of automated test and manufacturing/process equipment with regards to electrical schematics, mechanical CAD, test software, and SQL/MySQL databases
  • Work with new and innovative equipment to maintain any system or process with the understanding of production requirements
  • Support the implementation of Standard Work
  • Perform necessary Quality checks and data collection
  • Work with development team, manufacturing engineers as well as production personnel to resolve technical issues that are identified through the development and manufacturing process.
  • Collect Design for Manufacturability/Testability feedback
  • Participation in activities pertaining to product evaluation test, including ABS events, design review meetings, meetings with suppliers, as required.
  • Responsible for storage of final Test Spec and Gauge R&R results in SVN

Education and Experience Requirements

  • BS of Engineering, Physics, Mechatronics, Automation, Controls, Robotics, or Computer Science required
  • 2 years of work experience with electric motors and/or rotating machinery
  • 2 years of work experience in automation and controls
  • Project Management experience of successful development projects
  • Strong LabVIEW, C++, C#, Matlab, or VB experience
  • CAD software design experience (e.g. AutoCAD, Solidworks, Inventor, or Pro-Engineer)
  • Strong electrical, mechanical, and controls background is required to troubleshoot systems, machinery, and test equipment
  • Must have good computer skills (must be familiar with MS office, Excel, etc.)
  • Must have strong written and oral communication skills for direct and frequent communication with internal and external customers and suppliers.
  • US Citizenship required

Desired Experience

  • Experience in Test and Automation Engineering Group
  • Familiar with database structure and SQL language
  • Familiar with various industry standard machine communication protocol
  • Experience using precision measurement devices and data acquisition (analog, digital I/O, temperature, etc.)
  • Experience reading and working to blue prints, work instructions, and schematics to troubleshoot problems or make required changes
  • Experience with pneumatic or hydraulic systems
  • Experience with PLC controls and Ladder Logic
  • Prior experience in a Supervisory role
