Job Description



I.             PURPOSE OF POSITION

This position is responsible for directing the manufacturing operations of a $20M value stream. The position is responsible for directing the manufacturing of quality products that are delivered on time to customer-required dates and within budget. Manufacturing will be completed in a safe and clean work environment.  The position is accountable for achieving product cost targets, maintaining proper inventory levels, and a minimum overhead structure.



II.            KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Production Responsibilities:  Accountable for providing accurate shipment forecasts and achieving said forecast.  Responsible for all quality functions associated with the manufacture of these products.  Responsible for operating within approved budget boundaries.  Responsible to use Altra Business System (ABS) tools to drive continuous process improvements in quality, on-time delivery, cost savings and inventory reduction.

Operations Management:  Responsible for operating within all budgets including achieving product cost/margin forecasts.  Accountable for meeting needs of a growing business by maintaining minimal inventory levels.   Responsible for achieving operating performance targets and improvements including cost reductions, reduced cycle times, and reduced lead times.  Responsible for maintaining a clean and safe work environment that is in compliance with all MIOSHA, OSHA and EPA related environmental regulations and guidelines.  The Operations Manager is responsible for the maintenance of the facilities and the production equipment.

Associate Development:  Responsible for developing associates in a manner which meets the future needs of the business and annually preparing an HR plan to identify key contributors and areas of organizational and individual development.

Manufacturing and Engineering:  Responsible for leading the production startup processes for new product introduction utilizing manufacturing engineering resources.  Also responsible for driving lower product costs by reducing set up times, improving processes and reducing cycle times.

Business Management:  Work with the Marketing Managers, Sales Managers and Customer Support to produce business forecast by product family on a monthly basis.  Ongoing communication with the plant financial manager is expected in order to maximize operational profit. 

Nature and Scope:

Limited travel.  Continuously on call and frequently called back to plant during off duty hours.  Must exercise continuous leadership to focus efforts on priorities.  Must be technically proficient to “troubleshoot” manufacturing upsets.  A strong commitment to quality, cost, and on-time delivery is required.  An associate in this position must focus on customer expectations, prevent problems, and strive for continuous improvement resulting in improved results for him/her-self and other employees

Internal Relationships:

  • Reports to Plant Manager
  • Planning, Quality Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Technicians and Direct Labor resources within the Factory.
  • Interacts with Materials, Customer Service, ABS, & Finance functional groups on a variety of Operational Issues.
  • Interacts with Thomson Linear and Altra Corporate professionals to share best practices and collaborate on various initiatives.

External Relationships:

  • Interacts with suppliers to negotiate lowest total cost of ownership for Thomson Linear.
  • Interacts with customers as needed to address Quality, Delivery and Cost issues/initiatives.

V.          REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION

  • Education – Bachelor’s degree, engineering major preferred.  Will consider additional years of experience in place of degree. Advanced business degree beneficial.
  • Experience –7+ years overall manufacturing management experience is required with at least five years in manufacturing company preferred.  Experience within the Motion Control Industry is preferred.
  • Foreign Language – English fluency required.
  • Functional Training - Extensive experience utilizing Lean Tools to achieve sustained breakthrough improvements and specific experience with cellular manufacturing, process improvement, and new product introduction is required.

  • Ability & willingness to lead and work in a matrix organization with direct & indirect reporting relationships
  • Implementation of ABS/lean manufacturing/six sigma tools
