Job Description

The Process Optimization Engineer, West Chester will be responsible for leading process improvements in the manufacturing cells associated with the DC, AC, Machine Shop, and SK production lines.  He/she will maintain reliable and safe manufacturing systems while improving production rates, efficiencies, yields, costs and changeovers. He/she will be responsible for challenging status quo and driving the continuous improvement mentality throughout the facility. In addition, he/she will lead and supervise lean initiatives governed by the Altra Business System.

This position is located in West Chester, PA

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Along with those identified below, other duties may be assigned. 

  • Evaluate manufacturing processes and provide innovative solutions to improve production rates, efficiencies, yields, costs and changeovers.
  • Drives continuous process improvements for sustainability in safety, quality, delivery, and productivity within the area of focus. Compiles data, establishes regular communication of data, facilitates action plans and executes to complete critical actions on time and effectively.
  • Through the process of formal and informal production audits/ operator feedback and data analysis, recognizes process concerns and addresses them by developing and implementing a sustainable solution that can be tracked by quantifiable results.
  • Ensure repeatability and reproducibility of production equipment, processes, testing and measurement and analytical equipment.
  • Submits Deviations and Engineering Change Order requests as needed. Assist with change implementation.
  • Compiles and writes training material and conducts training/ coaching sessions on manufacturing activities.
  • Drives productivity improvements to reduce the cost of manufacturing while maintaining quality standards.
  • Champion the company’s culture/ core values (teamwork, continuous improvement, performance measurement, integrity, personal responsibility).
  • Prepare Capital Appropriation Requests for new equipment, including cost justification and ROI calculations.
  • Perform full validation on new equipment and produce validation report for approval.
  • Research and evaluate new manufacturing technologies and processes, including automation and autonomation opportunities.
  • Conduct and Participate Standard Work (SW), Variation Reduction Kaizen (VRK) as well as other Kaizen activities to improve stability of processes
  • Work with cross functional teams to solve and address problems that impact the manufacturing operation
  • Supports Line Engineers as needed
  • Supports New Product Development as needed

Job Requirements

KEY CHARACTERISTICS / QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High sense of urgency and results driven
  • Strong written, verbal and computer skills
  • Ability to work in a cross functional environment
  • Experience with ABS tool kit / Lean Manufacturing / Problem Solving tools is preferred
  • Familiarity with various manufacturing equipment and processes (laser welding, lathe machine, milling machine, CNC, transfer molding)
  • Working knowledge of inspection and measurement tools (CMM, Caliper, Micrometer, Gages)
  • Familiar with documentation and process control
  • Excellent diagnostic and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated proficiency in time and project management

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • The successful candidate will have an undergraduate degree in Mechanical/ Industrial Engineering or related field or equivalent experience.
  • A strong understanding of quality systems, problem solving, and other process improvement tools.
  • Five plus years of Manufacturing Engineering experience.
  • Prior experience with utilizing lean methodology is preferred.
  • Experience with QS, ISO, and FAA requirements is required.
