POSITION SUMMARY:

The Quality Engineer’s responsibilities include assisting with the development of quality systems, procedures, and quality controls to ensure that products consistently meet performance and quality specifications.  The Quality Engineer is a leader and strong technical resource who quickly, effectively, and permanently resolves quality problems with internal and external customers and suppliers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Along with those identified below, other duties may be assigned. 

  • Provide a strong quality direction on new product development / commercialization efforts to ensure that products meet quality performance standards and are highly manufacturable from a quality perspective.
  • Develop critical to quality specifications, control plans, test plans, capability studies, procedures, tools, and meaningful metrics to control all aspects of manufacturing.
  • Take a leadership role on customer complaints to identify, coordinate and effectively resolve problems in a timely manner.
  • Provide direction to our returned material area to ensure RMA process is working effectively.  Take root cause issues from the RMA area back to the cells for corrective action.
  • Develops plans and oversees the qualification of new suppliers and raw materials.  Work to quickly and permanently resolve supplier quality issues.
  • Train others in support of our quality culture.
  • Work with our top OEM customers to drive quality improvements to help the plant achieve preferred supplier ratings.
  • Administer the document control process as directed by quality manager. 
  • Work with Quality Manager to implement Altra Business System tools into our quality process.

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • Change Agent, demonstrated ability to drive process improvements through others
  • Strong computer skills, a high degree of Microsoft Excel knowledge is required
  • Excellent problem solving and analytical skills.  Experience with the 8D problem solving process.
  • Understanding of quality concepts in a Lean Manufacturing Environment
  • Good working knowledge of Six Sigma methodology and tools.
  • ISO 9001 / 13485
  • PPAP & 8D experience
  • Experience with working tier 1 or tier 2 OEMs is a great advantage since we need someone that can talk the same language as our large customers
  • Interpretation of engineering drawings, particularly Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
  • Failure Mode Avoidance tools such as PFMEA
  • Experience in being able to create proper documentation that describes how processes are executed and how problems are detected
  • Need to be able to conduct data analyses and statistical assessments so that the organization gains insight into what causes not only special-cause events, but common-cause capability issues as well
  • US Citizen, Permanent Resident, or Green Card holder

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • 3 - 7 years of actual quality related experience
  • Demonstrated ability to perform root cause analysis
  • Skilled at effective communication
  • Green Belt or Black Belt is a plus.
  • Vietnamese and Chinese language skills a plus. 

SCOPE AND IMPACT OF POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position significantly impacts internal and external quality, cost drivers of the Fremont Facility product lines, and has customer facing responsibilities.  The engineer must exercise continuous leadership to focus the efforts of the team on key priorities.  Individual must be technically proficient to “troubleshoot” issues relating to quality and quality systems.  This position must focus on customer expectations and strive for continuous improvement resulting in improved results for him or herself, customers, and the Fremont Team. 

KEY RELATIONSHIPS:

The Quality Engineer will work closely internally with the Quality Manager, Supply Chain Manager, Operations Manager, manufacturing associates, and manufacturing engineers.  Externally the Quality engineer will work closely with customers and suppliers to drive performance expectations.
