Job Description


The Sr. Mechanical Engineer—Process Automation is responsible for the design, analysis, and validation of mechanical tooling and systems used in automated manufacturing equipment. Working in small teams with other controls and mechanical engineers, they will serve as a technology leader bringing the latest innovative and cutting-edge manufacturing technologies to production areas across Kollmorgen. The Sr. Mechanical Engineer will also assist with the growth and development of the Automation Team by creating and setting engineering standards and methods within their function.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Along with those identified below, other duties may be assigned. 

  • Design, prototype, test, and validate mechanical systems and tooling to support machine builds.
  • Perform stress and deformation analyses to evaluate designs and select materials.
  • Create detailed equipment specifications based on project needs, identify and work with external subcontractors to design, build, install, and commission equipment solutions.
  • Creates detailed design documentation packages including bills of material, 2D drawings, and 3D models.
  • Lead design and validation reviews with internal customers, automation engineering team, and engineering management.
  • Build automation funnel and lead event-based funnel build activities. Identify opportunities where automated process equipment can drive improvement in Productivity and Quality. Write proposals and justifications for equipment purchases and builds.
  • Conduct manufacturing assessments in existing lines to identify areas of general improvement and automation opportunity.
  • Track performance of implemented machines or solutions, including efficiency improvement, Quality improvement, cost reduction, and cycle time reduction.
  • Advise Product Engineering on design for manufacturability and variation reduction to support implementation of automated equipment.
  • Delegates work to other mechanical or electrical engineers or designers where appropriate.
  • Serves as a technical lead; provides technical oversight, guidance, and advice to other engineers in the Automation Team.
  • Develops engineering best practices and standards to support Automation Engineering operations and efficient project development and deployment.

Job Requirements

Education and Experience Requirements


  • Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent field of study (such as General Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering) is required; Master’s in mechanical engineering is preferred
  • Five (5) to ten (10) years of work experience as a Mechanical Engineer with focus on mechanical design is required.
  • Demonstrated experience in design of dynamic systems that include motion and power transfer is required, such as linear and rotary bearings, belt systems, gear boxes, ballscrews etc.
  • Experience creating BOMs, quotes, project plans, and proposals is required.
  • Proficiency in one or more CAD packages (ex: Creo, Solidworks, Inventor, AutoCAD) is required.
  • Demonstrated experience with pneumatic, hydraulic, servo or stepper motion control systems is required
  • Experience with domestic or international site transitions of manufacturing lines is preferred
  • Experience creating capital equipment proposals and justifications including ROI calculations is preferred
  • Familiarity with global machine design standards such as CE, UL and IEC is preferred
  • Familiarity with system and motion control basics (PLCs, sensing, motors, drives) is preferred
  • Knowledge of lean concepts including Standard work, Variation Reduction/Six-Sigma, Value Stream Mapping, IPO and Process Flow Diagrams is preferred.
