Job Description

This position is responsible for the management of the Industrial Automation Systems Engineers and Technical Sales specialists team located in Radford, VA and remote locations over North America.  The team also support and coordinate post-sales application support in Latin America, Europe and China. 

The job entails a combination of driving change consistent with the policy deployment and strategic plan of the business unit and daily management of supporting the application needs of key customer accounts.  The manager must also be able to provide technical assistance in the integration of customer applications, including but not limited to troubleshooting servo control systems and various fieldbus protocols. The manager will also provide technical support to sales staff, as well as prepare and present demonstrations and applications of company product.  Provide training and follow-up technical support for customers, distributors, and Kollmorgen associates as required.  Write white papers as required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Perform the general Systems Application Engineer duties as described within those job descriptions.
  2. Align team with strategic direction of business unit to meet policy deployment objectives. Responsibilities will include:
    1. driving change through kaizens and process improvement,
    2. setting standard work practices to ensure global consistency of applications process,
    3. developing tools,
    4. building the team to support the growth of the business.
  3. Responsible for setting the standard work that establishes support structure and interface with the customer service team, sales application engineers (level 1), and regional sales teams.
  4. Responsible for assisting global Production, Quality and Engineering teams with defining quality issues and testing new products in development per customer requirements.
  5. Responsible for scheduling field service visits for troubleshooting, commissioning and training purposes.
  6. Responsible for managing the budget of the Systems Engineering team.
  7. Responsible for tracking and maintaining monthly data for Policy Deployment & Key Performance Indicators.

Job Requirements

Critical Competencies

  • Understanding of motion control theory.
  • Understanding of various fieldbus protocols
  • Experience with multi-meters, oscilloscope, schematics
  • Experienced with reading schematics and wiring, shielding and grounding practices.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Travel up to 20% to customer sites.
  • Critical thinking and complex problem-solving skills to identify alternative and correct solutions.
  • Ability to recognize process improvement opportunities and drive to implementation.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical or mechanical engineering (BSEE or ME) from four-year college or university required.
  • Minimum 5 years application engineering, systems engineering or design engineering with heavy customer interface required.
  • Management or leadership experience required.
