Job Description

This position leads global architectural design and fabrication of end of line product testing equipment.

This includes but is not limited to developing end of line product test specifications, testing strategy and standards, fabrication of new test stands, maintenance and upgrade of existing test stands. This position will also be responsible to manage and coordinate internal resources and external vendors to meet quality and schedule objectives. Test stands will primarily be focused on our Industrial Linear Actuator product family, but could also include linear systems, ball screw and linear bearing and guide product families.

The Test Engineering Manager will be joining the Thomson Linear team in Marengo, IL.  Thomson is part Altra.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Architectural Design

  • Generate test stand specifications in collaboration with the engineering team that facilitates compliance to published product specifications and CTQ attributes
  • Develop standard building blocks (modules) and strategies for the mechanical, electrical and software components
    • Configurable test stand BOM
    • Software & electronic HW platform guidelines and tools
  • Test stand design responsibility
    • Mechanical structure and interfaces with product being tested
    • Electrical design including schematics, drives, panels, sensors, operator interfaces
    • Software design including data collection & storage, GUI, analytics and troubleshooting
  • Project Management
    • Project schedule for internally developed equipment that supports overall project schedule
    • Verifying external suppliers are on schedule for outsourced projects
  • Develop a set of design standards for use on developments both internal and externally including:
    • Product Testing Standards including theory of measurement method
    • Electrical Schematics and both internal and external design aids
    • Database management for performance data recordings
    • User interface for production, engineering, and quality needs
  • Collaborate with global facilities to ensure testing standards meet environmental and regulatory requirements.

 

Machine Development

  • Collaborate with engineering & product team to develop product test specifications.
  • Develop end of line test equipment, using common architecture concepts and standard building blocks, with the primary focus on our Industrial linear actuator product line
  • Database development and management for the tracking of performance data recorded.
  • Create user guides, manuals, preventative maintenance routines, schematics, bill of material, and drawings for developed end of line test stands.
  • Perform training for production associates on released test stand.

Supplier Development

  • Engage and develop external suppliers who can support the development of end of line test equipment.
  • Provide product test specifications and support suppliers in providing quote packages.
  • Manage suppliers to ensure project schedule and test specifications are being utilized, report progress to project management.

Job Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Expertise (or the technical aptitude to develop expertise) in linear motion products
  • Strong analytical thinking, technical analysis, and data manipulation skills
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, organization, writing, and presentation skills
  • Ability to travel overnight and internationally up to 10% of the time
  • Ability to work effectively without close supervision
  • LabVIEW or comparable testing platform software

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s in Engineering (Masters preferred)
  • >10 years in test stand development or other automation equipment
  • >2 years’ experience supervising technical professionals; multi-site preferred
